Where are you now? Yes, what has become of all those we met—and who then left us? Those who got off the train too soon, who slipped quietly out of the newsroom, who were called back elsewhere—but where? And those we will never see again because of some unspoken quarrel, some misstep. And those who fail to show up. And those who make too much noise in our heads—and will do so no more. Perhaps…
Here are eight short stories recounting encounters—whether chance, planned, improvised, or lived within memory—that all end with the same question: where is the other person now? Whether they are alive or dead, the question remains the same.
